The amount of music consumers acquired in 2007 rose by 6 percent, according to a report by the NPD Group on Tuesday. However, they spent less. In addition, the increase in legal music purchases could not offset the declining sales of CDs.

A detailed examination of Apple’s iPhone business model for the iPhone shows that Apple has completely understood the economics of the mobile phone industry and exploited them fully. Moreover, Apple’s competitors are showing no signs of either extracting themselves from their plight or producing a phone that can compete with Apple’s, according to Daniel Dilger at Roughly Drafted on Wednesday.

Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) has proposed a sweeping bill to alter the terms on which customers purchase mobile phones. The "Wireless Consumer Protection and Community Broadband Empowerment Act of 2008" recognizes that wireless service has become a replacement for traditional phone service for millions of Americans and seeks to require broader disclosure of fees and terms, require plans with no early termination fee, proration of plans that do have termination fees, offer a contract-free non-subsidized phone and a host of other remedies that seek to address practices in the mobile phone industry.

Apple believes that the multitouch interface so popular on its iPhone will transfer to the MacBooks. The problem is that as Apple enforces its patents on various gestures, competitors will seek creative ways around those patents, and the technical community, accustomed to 25 years of standard mice and icons, will end up with many different user interfaces, according to C|Net on Tuesday.
