Forget battery problems, iPhone screen dead spots could flaw the shiny device

August 10, 2007

Apple iPhoneAccording to some reports, a few iPhone users are finding dead spots developing on the iPhone’s screen.

Rather than a display problem — which, like a dead pixel or two on an LCD screen is livable with — this has to do with the touch sensitivity of the screen. For a device that relies exclusively on touch, that could be a big issue.

Richard Windsor, an analyst from Nomura International, says that the iPhone uses a chemical deposition to provide touch sensitivity based on heat. Apple purchased the international rights to this technology from a bankrupt Finnish company who had already discovered a problem with the covering film, which would degrade after three to six months of intensive use.

If this is still a problem (in other words, if Apple wasn’t aware of it and/or hasn’t fixed it) there could be a lot of disgruntled users, and it could seriously affect the generally glowing reputation of their wonder device.

I’m not sure whether these problems have been confirmed, and if so if there were any exacerbating circumstances that led to them (like leaving the iPhone in a hot car), but time will definitely tell.
