Truphone demonstrates VoIP-over-Wi-Fi on iPhone
September 28, 2007In what could be a significant development, Truphone has demonstrated an iPhone making a VoIP call over Wi-Fi.
The demo (see video) isn’t wildly exciting, and at present it’s rather slow, but as a proof-of-concept, it’s quite exciting as it could lead the way to free Internet phone calls on the iPhone.
Of course, neither Apple nor their selected mobile partners are likely to be happy about this, as it could lead to seriously reduced call revenue - of course that’s dependent on having decent Wi-Fi access, so it could well hurt AT&T in the States more than it hurts O2 in the UK.
Expect some cunning blocking software to be installed in a subsequent iPhone firmware update.
